You Will Pay (Hardcover)

I've finished "You Will Pay" by Lisa Jackson.

Product Description

In a fast-paced, brilliantly twisted novel of suspense from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jackson, the deadly secrets of a long-ago summer stir to life once more.

It starts as a prank — a way to blow off steam after a long summer at Camp Horseshoe. Among the teen counselors, tensions and hormones are running high. No wonder the others agree when Jo-Beth Chancellor suggests they scare Monica O’Neal a little or a lot. Monica has it coming, and no one will really get hurt. What could go wrong?

Everything.

Twenty years later, Lucas Dalton, a senior detective with the sheriff’s department, is investigating the discovery of human remains in a cavern at what used to be Camp Horseshoe. Lucas knows the spot well. His father, a preacher, ran the camp, and Lucas worked there that infamous summer when two girls went missing. No one knows what happened to either of them, though with a dangerous convict on the loose, gossip was rife that they may have been kidnapped, or worse.

For Lucas, the case is personal — perhaps too much so. But it’s time to uncover the whole truth at last. That’s why seven former female counselors are coming back to the small Oregon town — among them, Bernadette Alsace, the woman Lucas has never forgotten. Each one knows something about that terrible night. Each promised not to tell. And as they reunite, a new horror unfolds. First come texts containing a personal memento and a simple, terrifying message: YOU WILL PAY. Then, the murders begin.

It started years ago. But it will end here — as a web of lust, greed, and betrayal is untangled to reveal a killer waiting to enact the perfect revenge.

The Hangman (Forgotten Files)

I've finished "The Hangman" the 3rd book in her Forgotten Files series by Mary Burton.

Product Description

Julia Vargas is a cop with a mission. When she’s not chasing down bad guys, Julia dedicates her time to investigating the Hangman serial killer the same unsolved case that her father, Jim Vargas, was working on when he supposedly shot and killed himself three decades before. While rumors continue to swirl around her father’s death, Julia attempts to hunt down the truth.

The case once again hits dangerously close, however, when a woman’s bones are discovered in a historic downtown home, together with a photograph of Jim and Julia as a young girl. As horrifying as this discovery is, it may just be the break Julia has waited for. Working alongside Tobias Novak, a homicide detective with whom she shares a complicated — and steamy — history, she’s forced to confront her own past even as the Hangman looms in the shadows. But as the mysterious killer circles closer, Julia can feel her own noose begin to tighten.

New Release 2017 (July 18)

#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen and Edgar Award-winning author Roy Johansen are back with Look Behind You, a novel featuring Kendra Michaels ― hired gun for both the CIA and FBI.

A serial killer is on the loose in San Diego with a most unusual M.O. With each kill, the perpetrator leaves behind mystifying random objects. In this confusing array of unrelated evidence, the one thing that is clear is that the murders all have one characteristic in common: they all require the specific skills of Kendra Michaels, hired gun for both the CIA and FBI. Kendra, who was blind for the first twenty years of her life, gained her sight through a revolutionary surgical procedure and now uses her acute powers of observation to assist in cases all over the United States.

FBI investigators soon make a startling discovery: the left-behind objects are actually souvenirs of other unsolved serial murder cases from around the country. And the new crimes feature “holdback” characteristics never disclosed to the general public ― meaning that one single killer was behind the nation’s most notorious serial murder cases and has now come to challenge and taunt Kendra.

The investigators ― a “dream team” of profilers ― join Kendra in the pursuit, but as the body count rises and the detectives themselves become the newest targets, Kendra must risk everything to defeat a psychopath whose terrifying plan is years in the making.

Cozy, Mystery Thriller and Romantic Suspense Mail is hosted every Saturday at Mystery Thrillers and Romantic Suspense Reviews.

The life Dr. Dylan Reinhart saves may be his own

Dr. Dylan Reinhart wrote the book on criminal behavior. Literally -- he's a renowned, bestselling Ivy League expert on the subject. When a copy of his book turns up at a gruesome murder scene -- along with a threatening message from the killer -- it looks like someone has been taking notes.

Elizabeth Needham is the headstrong and brilliant NYPD Detective in charge of the case who recruits Dylan to help investigate another souvenir left at the scene -- a playing card. Another murder, another card -- and now Dylan suspects that the cards aren't a signature, they're a deadly hint -- pointing directly toward the next victim.

As tabloid headlines about the killer known as "The Dealer" scream from newstands, New York City descends into panic. With the cops at a loss, it's up to Dylan to hunt down a serial killer unlike any the city has ever seen. Only someone with Dylan's expertise can hope to go inside the mind of a criminal and convince The Dealer to lay down his cards. But after thinking like a criminal -- could Dylan become one?

A heart-pounding novel of suspense more shocking than any tabloid true crime story, Murder Games introduces the next unforgettable character from the imagination of James Patterson, the world's #1 bestselling author.

New Releases 2017 (July 11)

In this electrifying new thriller in the New York Times bestselling series, a convicted murderer is on the run and Chief of Police Kate Burkholder must catch him before he strikes again.

Two years ago, Joseph King was convicted of murdering his wife and sentenced to life in prison. He was a “fallen” Amish man and a known drug user with a violent temper. Now King has escaped, and he’s headed for Painters Mill.

News of a murderer on the loose travels like wildfire, putting Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and her team of officers on edge. But this is personal for Kate. She grew up with Joseph King. As a thirteen year old Amish girl, she’d worshipped the ground he walked on. She never could have imagined the nightmare scenario that becomes reality when King shows up with a gun and takes his five children hostage at their Amish uncle’s farm. Armed and desperate, he has nothing left to lose.

Fearing for the safety of the children, Kate makes contact with King only to find herself trapped with a killer. Or is he? All King asks of her is to help him prove his innocence ― and he releases her unharmed. Kate is skeptical, but when the facts and the evidence don’t align, she begins to wonder who she should trust. Spurned by some of her fellow cops, she embarks on her own investigation only to unearth an unspeakable secret ― and someone who is willing to commit murder to keep it buried.

The Troubleshooters return in the latest thriller from New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann! Some Kind of Hero showcases Brockmann’s signature white-knuckle suspense, romantic twists, and sexy Navy SEALs.

Navy men don’t come tougher than Lieutenant Peter Greene. Every day he whips hotshot SEAL wannabes into elite fighters. So why can’t he handle one fifteen-year-old girl? His ex’s death left him a single dad overnight, and very unprepared. Though he can’t relate to an angsty teen, he can at least keep Maddie safe — until the day she disappears. Though Pete’s lacking in fatherly intuition, his instinct for detecting danger is razor sharp. Maddie’s in trouble. Now he needs the Troubleshooters team at his back, along with an unconventional ally.

Romance writer Shayla Whitman never expected to be drawn into a real-world thriller — or to meet a hero who makes her pulse pound. Action on the page is one thing. Actually living it is another story. Shay’s not as bold as her heroines, but she’s a mother. She sees the panic in her new neighbor’s usually fearless blue eyes—and knows there’s no greater terror for a parent than having a child at risk. It’s an ordeal Shay won’t let Pete face alone. She’s no highly trained operative, but she’s smart, resourceful, and knows what makes teenagers tick.

Still, working alongside Pete has its own perils — like letting the heat between them rise out of control. Intimate emotions could mean dangerous, even deadly, consequences for their mission. No matter what, they must be on top of their game, and playing for keeps or else Pete’s daughter may be gone for good.

Torte ― everybody’s favorite small-town family bakeshop ― is headed for the high seas, where murder is about to make a splash.

Jules Capshaw is trying to keep her cool as Torte gets set to make its transformation from quaint, local confectionary café to royal pastry palace. Meanwhile, Jules’s estranged husband Carlos is making a desperate plea for her to come aboard his cruise ship and dazzle everyone with her signature sweets. She may be skeptical about returning to her former nautical life with Carlos but Jules can’t resist an all-expense-paid trip, either. If only she knew that a dead body would find its way onto the itinerary.

Now, instead of enjoying tropical drinks on deck between whipping up batches of sea-salted chocolates and flambéing fresh pineapple slices in the kitchen, Jules is plunged into dangerous waters. Her investigation leaves her with more questions than answers: Why can’t anyone on board identify the young woman? And how can she help Carlos keep passengers at ease with a killer in their midst?  Jules feels like she’s ready to jump ship. Can she solve this case without getting in too deep?

Guest Post

Thanks so much for having me on as a guest today. Your blog pretty much summarizes my life. My name is Juliet Montague Capshaw, but please, please call me Jules. I’m a hopeless romantic, pastry chef, and as of late an amateur sleuth. I never anticipated stumbling upon murder. When I returned to my beloved hometown of Ashland, Oregon a while ago I thought I would be able to focus on nothing more than rolling out pie crusts and whipping mounds and mounds of silky buttercream. Ashland seemed like the perfect place to disappear into pastry and forget about the life that I had left behind.

Our little hamlet is nestled in the valley near the Siskiyou Mountains in southern Oregon. We’re not far from the California border and are a destination for theater and adventure lovers of all types. In addition to a variety of outdoor sports and recreation opportunities, Ashland is also home to the world-famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The festival originally began with a small theater troupe who performed Shakespeare’s works in the park every summer. It has grown over the year to encompass an entire complex right in the heart of our bustling downtown plaza. Actors in the company preform hundreds of shows on the famed Elizabethan outdoor stage as well as modern productions and musicals on the indoor stages. Whether you’re in the mood for a whimsical fairytale like Cinderella or a serious classic, like Othello.

A visit to Ashland feels like stepping back in time. Our community embraced the theater and designed the shops and restaurants on the plaza to resemble an old English village. The PCT trail, made famous by Wild, cuts through Ashland which means that there are always hikers and explorers passing through. As well as college students from Southern Oregon University and a plethora of actors, writers, and artists. It really is quite an idyllic place to live.

Our family bakeshop, Torte, sits in the center of all the action. Locals come in for an iced cold brew with coconut milk and a slice of our lemon strawberry pie. They cozy up at one of the tables or booths in the dining room and catch up on all the gossip. My mom, Helen, is known as Ashland’s unofficial therapist. People tend to spill their secrets while noshing on a slice of our buttery sweet bread.

I suppose one of the reasons that I’ve found myself mixed up in a handful of murder investigations is because I can’t stomach the thought of harm coming to anyone I know or love. When I left the cruise ship where I had worked as a pastry chef for over a decade and my husband, Ashlanders welcomed me home with open-arms. They didn’t pry or ask questions about why I had returned home. They nibbled on cinnamon scones and made me feel like family. It’s my duty to return the favor and protect them.

Being a pastry chef gives me a unique perspective. People tend to open up more when they’re eating something sweet. I have to admit that I’ve enjoyed the thrill of tracking down a killer on Ashland’s quaint streets. Only I didn’t expect that when I decided to take off for a week at sea that murder would follow me on board.

I agreed to help run the pasty kitchen on board the Amour of the Seas for a week. I figured it would be a chance to get some closure with my husband, and say “Bon Voyage” to the life I used to know. However not long after we pulled away from the dock I stumbled upon a woman’s body. So much for tropical baking, suddenly I was on a new case.

Every case that Claire Britten cracks is a win, not only professionally but personally. The forensic psychologist has spent a lifetime fighting a neurological disorder, and her ability to conquer it is a testament to her razor-sharp intuition.

Nick Markwood is used to winning in the courtroom, so when his latest case is overthrown by Claire's expert testimony, he can't help being impressed by her skill. He needs her on the team of his passion project — investigating unusual cases involving mysterious deaths. Her condition doesn't deter him, and neither does the attraction that sparks between them even if it should.

As they join forces to investigate a murder in St. Augustine, Florida, Claire is thrust into a situation far more dangerous than she'd anticipated, pushing her disorder to a breaking point. Just when she fears she can't trust her own mind, she discovers Nick's personal connection to the case — and wonders whether she can trust anyone at all.
