Murder Hooks a Mermaid (A Haunted Souvenir) [Mass Market Paperback]

Product Description

Nestled in Keyhole Bay, Florida, Glory Martine’s souvenir shop, Southern Treasures, is supposed to trap tourists — not ghosts. But a possessed parrot may be just what Glory needs to solve a murder.

Inheriting her great-uncle Louis’s bayside souvenir shop should have been a breeze for Glory. Instead it’s been one headache after another — with a lot of them generated by Bluebeard, a parrot with a mouth like a sailor and a personality a lot like her late great-uncle. But Glory’s troubles pale in comparison to those of her best friend Karen, whose ex may still have the personalized key chain to her heart, but whose brother-in-law is about to get locked up.

A diver has been found with a gaff hook in his chest, and Karen turns to Glory to help get her brother-in-law off the hook for his murder. But casting the net for the real killer won’t be easy. Glory and Bluebeard are about to find out that the secrets in Keyhole Bay run deeper than anyone ever imagined.

Shiver [Hardcover]

I've finished "Shiver" by Karen Robards.

Product Description

When she swore off love, he was the last man she imagined would steal her heart.

If driving a piece-of-crap tow truck through the seediest part of town with a Smith & Wesson beside her means putting a roof over her son’s head, then Samantha Jones is going to be the best damn repo woman on the books. The streetwalkers, the drug pushers, the bands of looking-for-trouble punks haunting the mean streets at midnight don’t intimidate her. These are her people. The guy she finds bound and bloodied in the trunk of her latest conquest, a flashy new BMW, is a different breed entirely.

Daniel Panterro was certain he was going to die. Instead, by a stroke of luck, he was beaten to within an inch of his life and left for dead. But if he’s having a bad day, Sam’s day is about to get way worse. Danny knows he hasn’t seen the last of the vicious drug runners who kidnapped him from protective custody. His only recourse is to take his pretty savior hostage and force her to help him. There’s no going back for Sam and her four-yearold son, Tyler. They’re in way too deep.

With ruthless killers stalking their trail, Sam’s only choice is to trust this handsome, menacing stranger. But as she relinquishes control, Sam feels an unmistakable desire. Could she be tempted by Danny, who seems intent on protecting her and Tyler from even his own darkest secrets? And what is the price of falling in love with a man who operates on the edge of danger — her heart, her life . . . or both?

About the Author

Karen Robards is the author of more than forty novels and one novella. A regular on the New York Times, USA TODAY, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists, among others, she is the mother of three boys and lives in Louisville, Kentucky.

My Review:

Samantha Jones is a single young mother who repos cars to provide a roof for her and her 4 year old son Tyler.  She never expected to find a beaten and cuffed man in the trunk of a BMW she is suppose to repo.  She is knocked unconscious and thrown in to the trunk with the FBI man Danny Panterro/Trey posing as Marco.

Danny/Trey/Marco believes this is the end when he is kidnapped from protective custody and viciously beaten almost till the inch of his life when he spots a beautiful and young women looking down at him.

When they escape Danny convinces Samantha to help him to safety with her Smith and Wesson.  Sam is very furious to be brought into this mess and just wants to get her son to safely.  When she arrives home she finds out her house been breached and her neighbor who is babysitting Tyler is brutally killed.  All of them are taken in protective custody and on the run from the viscous gangsters.

The relationship is slow building with a lot of sexual attention which concludes to a steamy love scene.

Where Angels Rest [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Where Angels Rest" by Kate Brady.

Product Description

A RACE FOR SALVATION

For the past decade, psychologist Erin Sims has been helping victims of violent crimes move on with life . . . but the one person she can't save is the one who matters most. In only seven days, her brother will be executed for a murder he didn't commit. Convinced she knows the identity of the real killer, Erin is determined to find the man and bring him to justice.

A COUNTDOWN TO DESTRUCTION

Sheriff Nick Mann moved to rural Ohio hoping to forget the tragedies of his past. When Erin shows up in town, bringing scandal and unwanted media attention with her, Nick knows she's trouble. No one believes sleepy Hopewell could harbor a serial killer . . . until residents begin to disappear. Now as Nick untangles the dark secrets plaguing his town, he can't help falling for the beautiful woman with the warm heart and iron will. And, as the days tick by, the truth becomes clear: Erin is hunting a vicious murderer-one whose only escape is to silence her forever.

My Review:

Erin Sims has been trying to prove her younger brother Justin isn't a murderer of a Senator's daughter.  She only has seven days before his execution to get solid proof and bring the real murder to justice.  She knows who the killer is and follows him to his new home under a new identity.

It has been 12 long years that Erin has been gathering information and collecting evidence against Jack Huggins aka Jack Calloway who has now settled in peaceful and quiet Hopewell Ohio.  When she arrives she is met by resistance and people who believe she is crazy as a loon.

Sherrif Nick Mann likes the quiet life he has with his daughter and his friends.  When he was in a cop in LA he had his share of the nightlife and the bright lights of the big city.  He has suffered a personal loss and the most excitement he sees now is the occasional drunk and disorderly and robbery.  He's not too thrilled when Erin crosses his threshold and brings the attention and catastrophe when she accuses one of Hopewells finest citizens.

Now young women on the verge of destruction are suddenly starting to disappear and it's bringing back memories and feelings that Nick thought were long ago dead.  Erin is in the middle.

This book is a well written psychological thriller which is plot driven and fast paced.  It's filled with lots of twists and turns with a smart, determined and independent heroine that can keep pace with the hero and keep him on his toes.

Slow Heat (The Bounty Hunters) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Slow Heat" the 5th book in her Bounty Hunter series by Lorie O'Clare.

Product Description

Slow Heat

Lorie O'Clare

As a new trainee at the King family’s bounty-hunting agency, Micah Jones is trying to keep his cool. But his latest assignment — to bring in a night-club owner suspected of money-laundering — heats up fast when he meets the “brains” of the outfit: an irresistibly beautiful bookkeeper who’s resisting arrest. So Micah takes her into custody — by taking her into his powerful arms and not letting go.

Held for questioning but released by police, Maggie O’Malley is still a person of interest — to Micah. And Maggie is interested, too — in his services. With his iron-hard muscles and tough-guy exterior, the Harley-riding bounty hunter is just the man Maggie needs to track down the real crook at the club. A slow-burning attraction ignites a firestorm of insatiable desire — until the secrets of Micah’s past are exposed. Explosive passion now must prove stronger than a history so terrifying it might haunt them forever.

My Review:

Micah Jones is a new trainee at the King's family bounty-hunting agency.  His latest assignment is to bring in the night-club owner suspected of laundering money but when he meets the brainy and beautiful bookkeeper who resists arrest he almost loses his cool.  He takes her into custody and also into his arms and decides he doesn't want to let her go.

Maggie O'Mallery is questioned by the police but they let her go because they don't have any evidence against her.  Maggie hires Micah to track down the real culprit at the club.  A smoldering hot attraction ignites between them that turns into a smoking hot love affair.  Then a secret from Micah's past is discovered and exploited.

Micah is definitely a bad boy who has changed his ways at the end.  He is a wild man with a kinky quirk in the bedroom (Oh Boy one of the love scenes was very kicky and hot at the same time).  Maggie was able to handle herself with the big boys and was able to keep up with them.

My Review:

Navy Seal John Roaker aka "Red Jack" has survived a mission gone bad which has left him with amnesia and his best friend and swim partner dead.  Dr. Laurie Smith is the only one that can help him regain his memories by using gentle and unconventional methods.  He is wary of therapists and is hurt and confused by his former teammates since they won't communicate with him.  Soon the relationship turns personal.

Dr. Laurie Smith is a "Seal Pup" and she is wary about getting involved with a Seal because her dad was a drunken Seal who took off one day and never came back.  Jack knows it's unwise to get involved with a "Seal Pup" especially one that is adopted by his CO Gich.

As Jack regains is memories and heals with Laurie's gentle touch he realizes his team was set up to extract something the CIA lost.

Laurie was a strong heroine who could hold her own against an alpha male.  I liked her methods to heal and calm Jack but I thought the sexual relationship happened too fast.  I thought it was kind of strange the first time that Jack went to see Laurie for the first time he stripped naked!

Sudden Death: A Novel of Suspense [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Sudden Death" the 1st book in her series by Allison Brennan.

Product Description

Heroic Justice

When a homeless veteran is found dead in a squalid Sacramento alley, FBI special agent Megan Elliott vows to find the murdered hero’s killer. Her investigation gets complicated fast, for the victim, a former Delta Force soldier, is just one link in a nationwide spree of torture and murder.

Straight off a job rescuing medical missionaries, soldier-for-hire Jack Kincaid returns to his home base in the Texas border town of Hidalgo only to receive the news that one of his closest colleagues – also ex-military – has been brutally murdered. Faced with an inept local police force, Jack takes matters into his own hands.

Now, as part of a national task force to stop the sadistic killings, by-the-book Megan and burn-the-book Jack form a tense alliance, sparked with conflict and temptation. But they struggle against more than passion, for a vicious pair of killers has only just begun a rampage of evil . . . and the primary target is much closer than Megan suspects.

My Review:

FBI special agent Megan Elliot is investigating a serial killings of veterans that are tortured and then killed.  Jack Kincaid is a former veteran who joins forces with Megan when one of his friends and former teammate is killed and becomes one of the victims.

We know who the killers are early in the story (Ethan and Karin).  Ethan was a reporter who was with a group of soldiers on a mission in Afghanistan.  He was a prisoner and tortured for three months before being rescued from the Taliban.  As a result, he has become suicidal and has mental issues.  Karin wants to learn his methods of torture techniques using needles.  Ethan won't teach her so she convinces him to capture and torture the soldiers or personnel connected to the mission when he was captured/tortured.  He believes they abandoned him so when they finally capture their victims Karin watches Ethan place his needles in vital points to cause the most pain.

I didn't really feel the romance between Megan or Jack because there wasn't much of a buildup.  Their interaction was only a few meetups and then working together (I did feel the attraction/lust between them though).  As individuals I liked them and they do work well together (once they trusted each other).

The torture scenes were quite graphic so as a warning if you don't like pain or torture don't read this book!

Hans was out of character in this book because he was angry with Karin but we didn't find out until the end why!

And what is the price of falling in love with a man who operates on the edge of danger — her heart, her life . . . or both?

The Uninvited (Krewe of Hunters) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "The Uninvited" the book in her Krewe of Hunters series by Heather Graham.

Product Description

1777: In the throes of the Revolutionary War, Landon Mansion is commandeered by British Lord "Butcher" Bedford. He stabs Lucy Tarleton — who spurned his king and his love — leaving her to die in her father's arms.

NOW: After the day's final tour, docent Allison Leigh makes her rounds while locking up…and finds a colleague slumped over Bedford's desk, impaled on his own replica bayonet.

Resident ghosts may be the stock-in-trade of stately Philadelphia homes, but Allison — a noted historian — is indignant at the prospect of "ghost hunters" investigating this apparent murder.

Agent Tyler Montague knows his hauntings and his history. But while Allison is skeptical of the newcomer, a second mysterious murder occurs. Has "Butcher" Bedford resurfaced? Or is there another malevolent force at work in Landon Mansion? Wary, yet deeply attracted, Allison has to trust in Tyler and work with him to discover just what uninvited guest—dead or alive—has taken over the house.

Or their lives could become history!

My Review:

The Tarleton-Dandridge house gives tours to the public.   All of the tour guides dress in traditional clothes and the weapons are real but there is no gunpowder.  Julian Mitchell a tour guide snuck out of the house after lunch to play with his band at a gig for real money.  He sneaks back  into the house within the 2 hour tours and plans to beg Allison for her forgiveness.

Alison has loved the house for a long time and she is also a professor at the University writing papers about the house and the time period.  When she is locking up for the night she finds Julian dead with his jaw punctured by his bayonet.  She is questioned by the police for hours and then a FBI Krewe agent is sent to find out what happened.

Tyler Montague used to work as a Texas Ranger with Logan but now works in the special unit of the FBI called the Texas Krewe of Hunters.  All the members have some six sense and most of them can see ghosts.  Tyler is lead on this case and when he investigates further he decides to bring the rest of his team in.

Allison starts seeing Julian everywhere she goes and she believes she is going crazy.  The first time she sees him she faints dead away.  Tyler figures out she is seeing a ghost and manages to see and hear Julian himself.  When his team arrive they also see and hear Julian who tells them he didn't kill himself.

The Krewe stay at the house to figure out about events that started about ten years ago with a boy that was electrocuted when he tried to break into the house and then a tour guide died from a massive heart attack.  A recent case involves a father and husband that is in a coma after visiting the house.

I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters except for Allison who I thought was rude, stuckup and unbelieving.  I didn't really enjoy the romance because it was an abrupt turn from her being rude, stuckup and unbelieving to how safe she felt around Tyler and she started realizing how handsome he was.

My Review:

This book is the sequel to "Don't Cry" which is J.D. and Audrey's book.   This book had references to the case/murder in "Don't Cry" and the main characters in that one.

J.D. asked his friend and fellow Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Will Bannock to pick up his younger sister Chattanooga Police Detective Julia Cass from the airport.  What she didn't expect was to pick up her first case and to work with Will while on the way to J.D's house.  Both her and Will are in search of tracking down a serial killer who cuts out his victim's tongues, then hangs them and then leaves their tongue and a stack of 31 dimes on a scale under their dangling feet.  The killer is nicknamed "The Tongue Slasher".

Julia finds herself attracted to Will but doesn't want to be because three years prior she saw her partner and soon to be lover shot and then died in her arms.  Besides she thinks Will is a womanizer since she saw him talking and flirting with many flight attendants and actually making out/all over each other with one out in public.

Will finds himself attracted to Julia but doesn't want to be because she's J.D's younger sister and he thinks she is a no-nonsense women.

The first victim is Federal Judge Lucien Lockhart who is corrupt and loves to double deal.  Next is shock radio commentator Roc VanVeter.  The killer likes to sit in his own cave and lovingly tapes a bit of his victim's tongue under their pictures in a scrapbook he made.

As Julia and Will investigate further they realize the killer has a hit list of all his victims.  They were connected somehow to an old case which the Lucien was involved.

I enjoyed the romance in this book  more than than the actual case (I was kind of surprised when the killer was revealed).  Beverly died writing the book and it was finished by a family friend.

My Review:

Kelsey Quinn works at the Delphi Center crime lab as an forensic anthropologist and she makes sure she can ID bodies using no more than tiny pieces of bones.  She finds some bones at a remote Philippines which leads to a sinister story.  Her search leads her to the crime scene of her ex-fiancee's murder and the only man that can save her is the man who broke her heart - Gage Brewer.  When she couldn't compete with his SEAL's job she gave him an ultimatum either it was her or his team.  He picked his team but couldn't understand how she can ask him.  He couldn't leave his team but he has never stopped loving or wanting her.

When Gage learns that Kelsey is missing and on the run it wakes up the protective side of him and he will make sure nothing will harm Kelsey and puts himself in the line of fire.  Now both are on the run from the very people that are suppose to protect her but in the end can they survive?

Gage is determined to show Kelsey their former relationship wasn't just based on sex but he loved her and still does.

We are also introduced to two new characters Derek Vaughn, Gage's team mate and best friend and FBI newbie Elizabeth.  There was a lot of chemistry between them and you could feel it every time they were on the same page.  Derek was a fun loving, caring and loves to joke around while Elizabeth was more serious and wanted to prove herself and gain some experience in her new position.

This book had a smoking hot couple who are given a second chance at love while on a tense and exhilarating journey run from the psycho killers.

The Bone Bed (A Scarpetta Novel) [Hardcover]

I've finished "The Bone Bed" 20th book in her Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell.

Product Description

A woman has vanished while digging a dinosaur bone bed in the remote wilderness of Canada. Somehow, the only evidence has made its way to the inbox of Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta, over two thousand miles away in Boston. She has no idea why. But as events unfold with alarming speed, Scarpetta begins to suspect that the paleontologist’s disappearance is connected to a series of crimes much closer to home: a gruesome murder, inexplicable tortures, and trace evidence from the last living creatures of the dinosaur age.

When she turns to those around her, Scarpetta finds that the danger and suspicion have penetrated even her closest circles. Her niece Lucy speaks in riddles. Her lead investigator, Pete Marino, and FBI forensic psychologist and husband, Benton Wesley, have secrets of their own. Feeling alone and betrayed, Scarpetta is tempted by someone from her past as she tracks a killer both cunning and cruel.

This is Kay Scarpetta as you have never seen her before. The Bone Bed is a must read for any fan of this series, or an ideal starting point for new readers.

About the Author

PATRICIA CORNWELL’s most recent bestsellers include Red Mist, Port Mortuary, and Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper — Case Closed. Her earlier works include Postmortem — the only novel to win five major crime awards in a single year — and Cruel and Unusual, which won Britain’s prestigious Gold Dagger Award for the best crime novel of 1993. Dr. Kay Scarpetta herself won the 1999 Sherlock Award for the best detective created by an American author.

My Review:

The Bone Bed returns Kay Scarpetta back to her roots with a very truly terrifying case.  It's like a continuation from "The Last Precinct with a strong, independent no-nonsense vulnerable older Scarpetta.  It was a more personal journey for Kay with her noticing that she is no longer a 20 or 30 year old anymore.  She is having problems with Benton her FBI husband who is keeping secrets about his relationship with a new partner, Marino with his new Twitter obsession and Lucy her niece.

As Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta investigates a case where a woman has vanished while digging a dinosaur bone bed in the remote wilderness of Canada she connects it to recent crimes at home - gruesome murder, horrifying torture and trace evidence from an ancient turtle the last living creature from the dinosaur age.

This was a terrifying and dark book with Scarpetta trying to figure out a riddle which involves a severed ear, an ancient but endangered leather back turtle and a dead mostly mummified woman's body from the cold bay.

Product Description

Bonnie and Clyde, they thought. And what’s-his-name, the sidekick. Three teenagers with dead-end lives, and chips on their shoulders, and guns.

The first person they killed was a highway patrolman. The second was a woman during a robbery. Then, hell, why not keep on going? As their crime spree cuts a swath through rural Minnesota, some of it captured on the killers’ cell phones and sent to a local television station, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers joins the growing army of cops trying to run them down. But even he doesn’t realize what’s about to happen next.

My Review:

Three teenager killers Jimmy Sharpe, Becky Welsh and Tom McCall go on a killing spree in Bonnie and Clyde fashion.

Lucas Davenport sends his best investigator at the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Virgil Flowers to help various law enforcement agencies to track them down.  As Virgil investigates further more bodies show up and he learns the deadly motive to the killings.  Notorious hardcore Sheriff Lewis Luke is Virgil's liaison in Bare Country where the killer's parents live.  Virgil realizes that Jimmy's homicidal urges are encouraged by his girlfriend Becky and Tom McCall is a dragged into the mess as a participate.

This book had great character development for everyone involved including the villains (their family history and personal life) and we even see Virgil interact with his parents (they are very close).  It was great to see Davenport, Shrake and Jenkins helping in Virgil's investigation.
